Book review of “Slam” by Nick Hornby
You get to know the main characters; Sam, Alicia, Andrea, Robert, Rufus and Sam’s mum. Sam is the main character. He’s the one you follow in the whole story and Alicia is his girlfriend, or I don’t know if I can call her that, but sometimes she is. Andrea and Robert are Alicia’s parents. They have very high thoughts about themselves. They are too fine for a teenage pregnancy.
The book is about teenage problems and pregnancy. The writer has chosen the main character’s background to be more or less the same as Sam’s. That gives us a bigger perspective. You get close into the character, and you get the feeling of how scary it is to be a parent at the age of 16.
The writer highlights the contrasts in the story a lot. Just when Sam found out Alicia might be pregnant, the first thing he did, was talk to TH; a poster he had on his wall. They had a long talk and TH gave him advice and told him all about what he would have done and things like that. It’s not usual to talk to a poster when you are becoming a parent, it brings up the childish part of Sam. And to me it tells that he is not ready to be a father yet.
I think it’s a very good book, and you get entertained all the time. You travel a lot in time, so there are a few repetitions. You get to see the result of the process. We hear about all he learned about the baby, and being a parent, and small things like how to change a diaper.
I would say the book is for both teenagers and parents. You get introduced to a teenage pregnancy which can be good to know for parents and teenagers. You get a taste of all the problems you have to face. But still, there is a lot of joy too.
